America, The Diversity Place grew out of The Diversity Times, a monthly newspaper that launched June 1, 2008. The 10,000 circulation Utah-based paper ceased publication in February.

 

Albert C. Jones, veteran journalist, published The Diversity Times. He will serve as publisher of America, The Diversity Place. Story subjects will include education, community service, economic development, business, green economy, technology, culture, environment, the arts, nonprofit organizations, seniors and faith-based organizations, among others.

America, The Diversity Place will feature reports on cuisine called “Chronicles of the Welcome Table.” Installments of an original four-act play will be posted regularly.

The company’s first project is “On the Road: People Bridges to People.”

For 12 to 18, months, staff of America, The Diversity Place will report from and hold marketing events in each state of the continental United States. “On the Road: People Bridges to People,” the marketing campaign, is designed to focus on inclusion and how people and communities are in service to each other.

Examples of inclusive organizations working to make their respective communities better places to live by providing leadership and educational programs for youths are the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Center for Community of Caring at the University of Utah and OrchKids, a program coordinated by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Five core values of Community of Caring are “Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trust, and Family.” These values serve as a foundation for school activities and initiatives in Community of Caring schools. Students at Lockerman Bundy Elementary School, known as OrchKids, participate in the program three days per week, receiving music instruction and taking part in enrichment activities.

Paula Smith, Ph.D., is executive director of Community of Caring. Smith is also an associate professor in the Department of Education Leadership and Policy at the University of Utah. Daniel Trahey is program manager of OrchKids. Trahey has directed educational programming and outreach events for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He has taught at Yale University, Baltimore School for the Arts, and the Baltimore Public Schools.

This summer, Trahey traveled to Venezuela to study El Sistema, the program that inspired OrchKids.

“On the Road: People Bridges to People” will begin its 48-state marketing campaign at the end of July. Staff will report first from Snow College and then go to Uintah and Ouray reservation.

From the Ute reservation, “On the Road: People Bridges to People” will report from Idaho and next report from Wyoming.

Garcia’s community service includes board of directors for the Utah Pride Center and the Utah Asian Chamber of Commerce. She has also worked on various committees for the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Asian Association of Utah.

Funding for the project will come from advertising sales and the sale of America, The Diversity Place T-shirts offered only at the company’s online store.
